Is Cheese Good For Dogs?
You may be thinking, noooooooo. Dont give your dog cheese! Its so fattening!
Well, yes that is true. Cheese is high in protein, fat and calories. Some dogs can be lactose intolerant too.
So as with any dogs diet, please do remember to keep, everything in moderation and be aware of portion sizes for them (which can be huge in human terms!). If you are concerned about weight, you could opt to swap out the cheddar cheese for low or reduced fat varieties too.
Cheesy Dog Biscuit Recipe
Preparation Time: 15 minutes;Cooking Time:20 mins
Difficulty: (Super) Easy
Ingredients:
- 115ml of hot water
- 1 chicken or beef stock cube
- 1 egg
- 200 grams of wholemeal flour (any standard flour will do but we prefer wholemeal!)
- 40 grams of shredded cheddar cheese
Method:
#1Preheat your oven to 180 degrees Celcius
Pop your oven to 180 degrees Celcius so that its ready to bake when you are.
#2 Make your stock
You could either boil 115ml of water and add your stock, or personally, I popped the kettle on. I then put a stock portion into a measuring jug along with the hot water from the ketlle and mixed well.
#3 Mix your flour, egg and stock together
With a wooden spoon, mix together your flour, egg and stock mixture to make a dough.
#4 Add in that cheese
Grate your cheese as finely as possible and then add it to the mixture.
Mix through again adding more water or flour if you feel the consistency isnt quite right to roll out a dough.
#5 Knead your dough and roll out
Gently flour a surface and knead your dough gently read to roll out.
Using a rolling pin, you want to create an even thickness of around 1/4 inch. The thinner they are, the quicker they will cook and vice-versa.
#6 Get creative with those dog biscuit shapes
You are now ready to cut out your favourite shapes. From circles to love hearts. Bones to doggy shapes, the world is your oyster here!
Our favourite bone cutters can be foundfind here on Amazonbut today we opted to try out our new Lilys Cookie Cutter (2.25 available in our shop). While bigger in size, they made super cute biscuits.
Remember to roll together any dough scraps and roll them back out again to create even more cheesy dog biscuits. Youll be surprised how many you can get out of this small batch.
#7 Place on baking paper or a non-stickcooking sheet
Once youve cut out your shapes, pop them onto a baking tray
These wont reduce much in size, so do leave a little space between them to bake.
#8 Ready, Steady. Bake!
Its time to pop in the oven. I ended up with two trays and found that around 20 mins was enough to make them crisp enough to form biscuits.
Id set the alarm for 15 minutes to check in on them (but no need to turn them over during cooking).
#9 Leave to cool before treat time ;0)
They really wont take long to cool down and then its treat time!
As you can see, my own furiends were never far from my feet when making these and were ready to get stuck in ;0)

A Look Into The Pets Barn Biscuit Bakery
Our gourmet dog treats are just a part of what Pets Barn is about. The story begins more than 50 years ago, when Dean Traviss dad was managing a feed store in El Paso. Eventually, he became the owner of the store. Today, his son Dean owns and operates 22 Pets Barn stores in El Paso, San Antonio, and Las Cruces.
This is very personal, says Dean Travis. This was my Dads business, now its mine, and my son Eric is running our pet food plant. We make it a point to buy every ingredient from U.S. farmers and producers and we only use high-grade ingredients that we would want our own pets to eat.

Honey Wheat Dog Biscuits
Dogs with a sweet tooth will enjoy these mildly sweet biscuits made with natural honey, which is a healthier choice than using refined sugar.
Ingredients
- 1 package dry, active yeast
- 1/2 cup warm water (Between 110 and 115 degrees F)
- 3/4 cup beef broth
- 3 tablespoons honey
- 1 egg
- 1 cup wheat flour
Directions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
- In a big bowl, proof the yeast by dissolving it in the warm water. Let the mix sit until it begins to foam.
- Once the yeast blooms, add in the broth, honey and egg and stir.
- Gradually stir in the flour just until the mix is moist. Add a little extra flour if needed to make the dough firm.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured board and gently knead it into a ball.
- Roll the dough to about 1/4 inch thick and cut it into shapes with your favorite cutters. If you prefer, you can roll the dough out in a rectangle and simply cut it into squares or rectangles.
- Place the biscuits on a cookie sheet that is lightly greased with non-stick spray. Using a thin skewer, poke a few holes in each biscuit to help them bake more evenly.
- Bake the biscuits at 350 degrees F for approximately 45 minutes, and flip them over halfway through so they bake evenly on both sides. The biscuits need to dry sufficiently so they become crisp. Removing the extra moisture also helps preserve them longer. Ovens vary, so you may need to extend the baking time to achieve the desired texture.
- Let the biscuits cool and dry for at least 12 hours before Fido gets his first treat. This gives them time to become nice and crisp, which makes them better for your dog's teeth.
- Store the biscuits in an airtight container in a cool place for up to two weeks.
Carrot Apple Biscuits
Carrots and applesauce might seem like odd ingredients for a dog biscuit, but dogs really love the way these foods taste. If you don't believe it, make a batch of these biscuits and let your dog be the judge.
Ingredients
- 1 cup of boiled carrots, finely mashed
- 1 cup of apple sauce
- 2 eggs
- 2 cups unbleached flour
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 1/4 cup wheat germ
Directions
- Preheat your oven to 325 degrees F.
- In a large bowl, combine the carrots, applesauce and eggs. Stir until combined well.
- In a separate bowl, combine the flour, oats and wheat germ. Stir them together, and gradually add the dry mix to the wet mix.
- Stir all the ingredients together, and add a little more flour if needed to make the dough firm enough to basically hold its shape.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured board, and roll it to 1/4 inch thick.
- Cut the dough into bars, and place them on a non-stick cookie sheet.
- Bake them at 325 degrees for approximately 50 minutes, and flip them halfway through the baking time to ensure even baking. The biscuits are done when they are a deep golden brown.
- Allow the biscuits to cool completely, and keep them stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
Foods You Should Never Include
Dogs can eat many of the same foods that people eat, so you can improvise a bit with some of these recipes. However, there are a number of food items you should definitely avoid including in your biscuit recipes because they can potentially make your dog sick.
These include:
- Chocolate
- Onions
- Raisins and grapes
- Avocados
- Walnuts and macadamia nuts
- Uncooked garlic
- Excessive salt or sugar
An Occasional Treat Never Hurts
Offering your dog treats made from one of these biscuit recipes is a great way to show him you love him. Just don't overdo it. Even healthy snacks are not a replacement for a well-balanced diet of high quality kibble. Save the treats for special moments.
